Man Bites Dog

Although this film is primarily shocking, as in the still above, it has some other obvious aims. With a deeply sardonic eye, it turns our attention to the dark side of our modern spectator culture. 

30th Century Man

This film sets out to show the transformation of a 60’s pop star, into a deep and foreboding songwriter; it does exactly that. It also shows the scope of his work, and the acts he has come to influence

James and the Giant Peach

There are few other films that are able to hit at the heart of childhood escapism like the Henry Selick directed James and the Giant Peach. It also featured his famous stop motion animation that would go on to help make Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas so famous.

Food Inc.

Robert Kenner’s Food Inc. caused quite a stir when it rose to prominence in 2008. Many of the facts presented in this documentary aren’t all that new, but the images it adds to them will make you want to change your diet all the more.

Big Fan

An astoundingly insightful film about the nature of the modern sports spectator, Big Fan also features a great performance by Patton Oswald and thoughtful comedy. 

Brokeback Mountain

Everything said about this film’s emotionality is true, and at the end you’ll likely forget about anything except its narrative. 

Alphaville

Alphaville’s way of focusing on the characters that inhabit an imagined world, rather than the world itself, is nearly peerless in sci-fi. Completely engrossing, and still fresh till this day. 

The Crazies

The Crazies definitely involves some of that good ol’ Cold War paranoia that the image above channels, but not too much beyond that. This one from George A. Romero has not aged well, and seems pretty corny by todays standards (especially after the remake). Still, it definitely remains  entertaining.

The Endless Summer

The perennial window into surf culture, The Endless Summer remains relevant to this day. This movie set the basis of most all surf, and even skate, documentaries that came after. It’s also a joy to watch on sunny days, or any day you wish it was.

The Call of Cthulhu

If I had to describe this short film with one word it would ‘faithful’; faithful to the story its adapted from, and faithful to its early silent form it uses. From the still above you can see it aims to please any fan of the original story ‘The Call of Cthulhu’.

The Fountain

Very much a serious meditation on life on life and love, this film from Darren Aronofsky is a bit of a slow mover, especially when compared to some of his other work. Still, the imagery and the questions it asks more than make up for it.

Them!

Widely known as one of the best 1950’s ‘creature feature’ flicks, Them also provides some insight into nuclear fears of them time. Still, its mostly just fun to watch; think drive-ins.

Shutter Island

This film takes you inside the minds of tortured and disturbed minds, while keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole way. I think this image represents that.

Donnie Darko

This film is quickly starting to become regarded as a modern classic. Its balance of horror, teenage angst, and philosophical questioning earn that consideration. 

The Shining

Madness, isolation, Jack Nicholson, its all here; and all of that is The Shining. Originally panned upon it’s release, Stanley Kubrick’s film has become a horror classic.
