Gangs of New York
Martin Scorsese’s gritty depiction of Civil War era New York manages to stay gripping throughout, even if it does have some problems tying up the plot towards the end. You would think the story of a pastor’s son’s vendetta against a butcher gang leader would be able to sustain itself. But, as always, Daniel Day Lewis’s performance is all the reason you’ll need to watch.

Crimes and Misdemeanors 
While definitely not one of Woody Allen’s strongest outings, Crimes and Misdemeanors contains some interesting musings on the upper class and relationships, of course. It is also one of Allen’s more heartfelt films, with Cliff Stern (Allen) playing the role of dedicated family man.

This documentary about New York chef Kenny Shopsin engages effortlessly. Shopsin, in addition to running a favorite local restaurant, is full of surprising ‘half baked philosophies’ that you might not expect upon first sight. Don’t expect any sap, however, while watching this; Shopsin is always on his toes, even while sitting.
